North Shore Museums
Carnegie Science Center, the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and the Andy Warhol Museum cluster on the North Shore — all walkable from one another and easy to combine into a half-day. Each runs weekend kids' programming year-round and free or low-cost admission days throughout the year.
Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium
On the eastern edge of Highland Park, the zoo is one of the few combined zoo-and-aquarium facilities in the country. Open daily year-round with seasonal events — ZooBoo in October, Holiday Lights in December and weekend conservation programs throughout the year.
Riverfront and Outdoor
The Three Rivers Heritage Trail runs 33+ miles of paved, family-friendly biking and walking along all three rivers. Point State Park, North Shore Riverwalk, the South Side Riverfront Park and Schenley Park all run free weekend family programming spring through fall.
Free Summer Family Festivals
Three Rivers Arts Festival, Picklesburgh, EQT Regatta, Little Italy Days and most neighborhood festivals are explicitly family-friendly with daytime family programming, kids' activity tents, and stroller-accessible layouts.
All-Ages Concerts and Performing Arts
Pittsburgh Symphony's Fiddlesticks family series, Pittsburgh Ballet's family matinees and the Children's Theater at the City Theatre all run family-targeted programming. Stage AE outdoor shows are typically all-ages.
Sunday Family Day
Sunday in Pittsburgh — Phipps Conservatory brunch, Pirates afternoon games at PNC Park, Sunday museum hours at the Carnegies, the National Aviary, and free admission days at the Frick rotate through the calendar.
